Nicholson steps in as chief executive bringing more than three decades’ experience with some of big house builders, including senior executive posts at Crest Nicholson and Linden Homes, as well a senior sales roles at Berkeley Homes and Ideal Homes earlier in his career.
He spent the past year as a non-executive on the Cala board and succeeds Kevin Whitaker who steps down after eight years as chief executive.
Whitaker’s departure marks the end of a period of strong growth for Cala under private-equity ownership and longstanding shareholder support.
Nicholson now takes on the task of shaping the next strategic cycle at a time when softer demand, stubborn build costs and planning friction continue to weigh on the sector.
He said: “Over the past year on the board, I have witnessed firsthand the exceptional talent within our team.
“Following more than a decade of strong growth, I look forward to working alongside the Cala team to execute our strategic vision and advance Cala’s standing as one of the UK’s leading house builders.
“My priorities will be to apply my experience to deliver sustainable growth, further enhance operational excellence, while maintaining our industry-leading approach to quality and service.
“While market conditions are likely to remain challenging into 2026, I am confident that, with the strong support of our shareholders, Cala will continue to further strengthen its leadership position in the UK house building industry.”
